Wanda Mason Obituary

Wanda DeVault Mason

Wanda DeVault Mason was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, to Fred and Ethel DeVault on June 22, 1931. She had three older siblings: two brothers, Daniel and Daren DeVault, and a sister, Myrtle DeVault Harma.

Wanda Mason graduated from Hamline University School of Nursing, St. Paul, Minnesota, in June 1953. She worked six months at St. Francis Hospital in Grand Island, Nebraska, before returning to Minneapolis, where she secured a position at Minneapolis General. She repaid the money her sister had lent her for nursing school by providing financially for her sister and her niece, Wanda Jean, while her sister attended laboratory technician school.

In 1955, the three of them moved to Billings, where Wanda went to work at St. Vincent Hospital and her sister went to work in the laboratory at the Billings Clinic. Wanda later went to work for the City of Billings, which she retired from in 1996.

On Sept. 28, 1957, she married John V. Mason from Laurel. They did not have any children, and her nieces and nephews became her family. She had an adventurous spirit, biking all over Montana and parts of Wyoming, climbing the Beartooth Mountains during the winter, building a snow cave to sleep in, taking seven of her great-nephews skiing by herself, taking a great-niece on a senior trip to the East Coast, and taking five teenage great-nephews on a summer vacation to Yellowstone National Park.

Wanda passed away on July 30, 2021.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her siblings and her husband. She is survived by many nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, and the next generation great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews in Montana, California, Washington, New Mexico, Colorado and Minnesota.
