Obituary

Roger C. Baxter

Born: February 20, 1945

Died: April 6, 2023

We are sad to announce the passing of Roger Baxter of Roundup, Montana. He died at age 78 on April 6, 2023. Roger passed surrounded by his family after a hard-fought battle with cancer.

Roger was born and raised on a farm a few miles from Eldorado Springs, Missouri. His mother, Edith, passed away when he was 2 years old. At the same time, his much older sister left for college, leaving Roger and his dad, Sid, to take care of the farm. Roger had many friends and family growing up on the farm, but eventually he left Eldorado Springs to become a land surveyor.

Roger’s surveying career landed him in Roundup, where he met his wife, Susan. They were married on Dec. 28, 1965. They raised three children and followed them around to all the activities they participated in. They stayed married for 57 years, until his death.

Roger worked for Bureau of Land management as a Cadastral Surveyor for 40 years, working all over Montana as well as North and South Dakota, retiring after his 60th birthday.

Roger enjoyed spending time outdoors hunting and fishing. Each fall, he went to hunting camp in the Missouri Breaks with his kids, grandkids and buddies. There are all kinds of good hunting stories — just ask anyone who went to hunting camp.

As soon as the weather cooperated, Roger was off to catch fish, starting with the annual paddlefish trip on the Missouri River. He cast his line in many different rivers and lakes — or any body of water that might hold the next lunker. His favorite place to fish was probably in his boat on Fort Peck. Many Fort Peck trips were taken with his wife, kids, grandkids and buddies. Roger was the center of the family fishing/camping trip to Canyon Ferry each summer. Lots of good fishing stories.

As a proud member of the Masonic Lodge and Shriners, Roger was very involved in the Masonic activities and voluntary work, including building bikes for kids and taking care of the Shriner band during the annual the 4th of July parades.

Survivors of Roger include his wife Susan, married for 57 years; his children, Tammi, Brad (Melissa) and Jeremy; 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Roger was preceded in death by his parents, Sidney and Edith Baxter; brother Sharon; and sister Elaine.

Roger, there will be sadness in our hearts as we say goodbye, but there is profound gratitude for your life, and you will never be forgotten.

Memorial Service will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, April 15, at the Catholic Church in Roundup, followed by a graveside service. Please join the family for cookies and desserts at the Masonic Lodge around 3 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to the Roundup Masonic Lodge or the Shriners Hospitals for Children. Flowers can be ordered from Sellars Place Floral (in Roundup).
