Marlene Sprankel

April 28, 1935 ~ June 1, 2023 (age 88) 88 Years Old

Marlene Sprankel, 88, died unexpectedly on June 1, 2023, in Billings, after a brief illness. Born on April 28, 1935, in Red Lodge, to parents Jacob and Ingeborg Handeland, Marlene grew up in the Carbon County area, excelled in the classroom and on the basketball court, graduated from Roberts High School in 1952, earned a degree from Billings Business College, and worked for McKesson & Robbins in Billings.

While working in Billings, Marlene met and fell in love with Glen Sprankel, whom she married on April 23, 1955. They enjoyed over six wonderful decades together, during which time they raised their three children and welcomed grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Always devoted to her family, Marlene relished her role as wife and mother, and she immersed herself in her children’s activities, serving as Cub Scout leader, Little League volunteer, and school sports cheerleader. In addition to attending every school event for and with her children, Marlene devoted time as a volunteer for the March of Dimes and the American Heart Association.

Marlene also loved spending time with Glen at country music concerts, county fairs and bull riding competitions, and she loved to travel with Glen, especially when they were able to visit Disneyland with their children, and later in life, with their grandchildren. Some of Marlene’s other interests included gardening, bowling, caring for animals, solving crossword puzzles and watching the Golden State Warriors (her favorite NBA team) win championships.

Marlene is survived by her three children, Dennis, Glenda (Gavin) and Robbie; her three grandchildren, Jenna (Nick), Katrina (Anthony) and Evan; and her three great-grandchildren, Brantley, Owen and Roland. She was predeceased by Glen, who passed away in 2017; by her parents; and by numerous aunts and uncles who played a very special role in Marlene’s life.

Marlene will be greatly missed, but her family takes comfort in knowing that she and Glen have reunited in their heavenly home. A celebration of Marlene’s life is being planned for the near future and will be announced when the date and venue are determined.

The memorial service will be held 10am Wednesday at Michelotti-Sawyers Mortuary. Interment will be at Yellowstone National Cemetery.

Memorial donations can be made to the Yellowstone Valley Animal Shelter or the American Kidney Fund.
