Katherine "Kathy" Mitzel

Katherine “Kathy” Mitzel passed away peacefully on Monday, March 13, 2023, at home, surrounded by loved ones.

Kathy was born on Dec. 26, 1946, to John and Elizabeth Mitzel in Billings, and raised on the family farm in Worden.

Kathy graduated from Huntley Project High School in Worden. After high school, she attended beauty school at Hollywood Beauty School in Billings. After graduating from beauty school, she became a small business owner. She started Hair House, a wig shop in downtown Billings. Later in Kathy’s life, she converted the family dairy barn into a beauty salon called Riverside Hair Fashions.

Kathy’s other passion in life was flowers and landscaping. Her yard was a source of immense pride. There are many plants that owe their life to Kathy. She had a knack for saving plants. Her yard was always immaculate and manicured with a wide variety of flowers.

While flowers were her passion, her children and grandchildren were her one true love in life. Kathy spent as much time as she could with her grandchildren. She loved telling stories or teaching them.

Later in Kathy’s life, when she was not working in her flower beds or hanging out with her grandchildren, you could find her thrift shopping. Kathy was always on the lookout for her next bargain. Kathy also loved her chihuahua, Molly, who was her constant companion and beloved pet.

Kathy is survived by her children, Angie, David (Cami), Amy (Jerimy) and Emily; her grandchildren, Kaitlynn, Kalani, Brooke, Kaden, Lily, Evelyn and Cordell; her brothers, Bob and Burt; sisters Gerry and Joyce; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Kathy is preceded in death by her parents, John and Elizabeth Mitzel; brother Mike; nephews Tory and Michael; and grandchildren James and Ava.

There will be a service for Kathy at noon on Friday, March 17, at Sts. Cyril and Methodius Church in Ballantine.
