It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Thomas Vernon West, who went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on January 30, 2026. Tom passed away at home at the age of 83, surrounded by his family after a long battle with cancer.
Tom was born on November 4, 1942, in Forsyth, MT, to Vernon Leroy West and Edna Ann Thom. He spent several years in Sheridan, WY, before moving to Billings. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. On October 6, 1961, Tom married the love of his life, Sandra Rae Neibauer; they shared 64 beautiful years of marriage.
A dedicated professional, Tom worked for the Montana Highway Department for 39 years. Outside of work, he enjoyed camping, the outdoors, and traveling with Sandra. He took great pride in his yard and flowers and was known for being impeccable in everything he did. He also cherished his time catching up with friends over coffee.
Tom was a natural leader, serving as the president of his 9th-grade class at Lewis and Clark with the memorable slogan, “Go West Young Man, Go West.” He was exceptionally handy and loved teaching and helping others, often taking on extra jobs to share his skills. His greatest joy was his family; he was a devoted father who coached his sons' sports teams and his grandchildren were his pride and joy and he loved spending time with them and attending all their activities. Tom was also a lifelong dog lover, particularly of his schnauzers, including his loyal companion, Mia, who never left his side.
He is survived by his wife, Sandra West; his children, Pam (Curt) Tucker, Tim (Tami) West, Tom (Joni) West, and Kristen (Dart) Frank; his grandchildren, Cody, Jeremy, and Tyler Tucker; McKenzie (Frank) Sequeira; Madison West; and Shane, Kolby (Hannah) McGarrah; and Great Grandchildren Lucas, and Rhett McGarrah; his sister, Janice Gumpf; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family members. He was preceded in death by his parents, his Aunt Irene, his brother-in-law David, and his Great-nephew, Mitchell.
To our most amazing husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. Our hearts are broken, not having you here with us, but we are comforted knowing we will one day be reunited with you in heaven. We love you so much.
The family wishes to thank Stillwater Hospice for the exceptional care, compassion, and love they showed Tom.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Trinity Lutheran School.
