Susan McDaniel

Susan McDaniel passed away peacefully on February 28, 2026 in Billings. She is survived by sister, Gretta Wells of Kalispell and nieces, Jennifer Wells of Bozeman and Jamie Lefebvre of Whitefish and grand nieces, Jalan and Lily. She was preceded in death by her husband of 25 years, Stu Conner.

Susan was born in Austin, Texas. Susan began her journey into higher learning attending Smith College in Massachusetts graduating cum laude. She received her master’s degree from Middlebury College in Vermont and her doctorate from Yale University, both in Italian Language and Literature. After graduation, she spent two years teaching at Middlebury before joining the staff at Sarah Lawrence College for several years.

Susan spent several years as the director of the Art Museum in Miles City while married to her first husband, Andy Elting, and assisting him in his veterinary practice. After Andy’s death she moved to Billings in 1994, beginning a career at Rocky Mountain College. After several years working in an administrative capacity including Academic Dean, she moved back into the classroom due to her love of teaching, retiring in 2012 as a Professor. Susan was a strong, fiercely independent woman who enjoyed her friends and family. Her interests included classical ballet and music, jazz, skiing, swimming and traveling.

Susan would appreciate support of Help for Homeless Pets, Bark Animal Shelter or Dress for Success. Susan will be missed by family and friends.
