A hero gets remembered, but a legend never dies.
You would often find Steve in his favorite corduroy shorts and a button-down shirt, always wearing a smile and ready to share a laugh. Steve never sought the spotlight, but to those who knew him, his generosity, love for his family, and unwavering work ethic made him larger than life.
Steve Reger was born on September 4, 1952, to Jim and Jane Reger and passed away peacefully at home on June 28, 2026. He was one of three children and grew up alongside his siblings, Randy Reger and Maree Ryan. Steve graduated from Billings West High School in 1970, where he began building the values of hard work and loyalty that would define his life.
In 1976, Steve met the love of his life, Debbie. They married in 1977 and built a beautiful life together, raising five children. Their marriage was one of enduring love, partnership, and devotion that spanned nearly five decades.
Steve was a natural entrepreneur. In 1989, he and his brother-in-law, Tom Ryan, founded the Billings Club. During which time, he sponsored Big Sky Little league and formed a wide circle of friends. In 1998, Steve, Tom and Summerfield launched Montana Oil Properties. Through determination, integrity, and fortitude and the help of their dedicated secretaries Bonnie Denham and Stacey Warburton. This grew into a highly successful business.
While Steve achieved great success in business, his greatest success in life was his family. He loved gathering around the card table, surrounded by laughter and friendly competition. Some of his most treasured memories were made by taking his children and grandchildren to Del Mar to watch his beloved racehorses. Whether at home, on the racetrack, or around the card table, Steve excelled at bringing everyone together and creating moments his family will cherish forever.
Steve also believed deeply in giving back. A true philanthropist, he quietly and generously supported his community throughout his life. He made significant contributions to Billings Clinic and St. Vincent's Hospital, along with many other charitable causes. His legacy lives on through the countless lives he touched with his generosity and compassion.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Debbie; his five children: Steven (Amber) Reger, Abbie (Jonathan) Joseph, Jennie (Tim) Marron, Daniel (Allison) Reger, and Samantha (Michael) Harris; and his twelve cherished grandchildren: James, Jenacey, Jorey, JJ, Ruby, Brooklyn, Hadlee, Murphy, James, Miley, Carter, and Hunter. He is also survived by his siblings, Randy (Debbie) Reger and Maree (Tom) Ryan, along with many extended family members and dear friends whose lives were forever enriched by knowing him.
Steve's legacy is not measured by the businesses he built or the success he achieved, but by the love he gave, the family he cherished, the friendships he nurtured, and the countless people he helped along the way. His wisdom, generosity, sense of humor, and steadfast love will live on through all who knew him.
In lieu of a memorial service we are having a celebration of life July 10th, at Highlands Country Club at 5:30pm. Please join us for food, drinks and his favorite music to celebrate Steve’s wonderful life and as he would always say, bless you.
A hero gets remembered, but a legend never dies. Steve's legend will live on in every story shared, every hand of cards played, every trip to Del Mar, every life he touched, and everything else.
