Sidney Carl “Corky” Dunagan passed away peacefully in Lavina on May 15, 2022.
Sidney Carl “Corky” Dunagan began his adventure on Oct. 24, 1944, in Bessemer, Michigan, the son of William Franklin Dunagan and Jean Berling Dunagan.
Carl Berling, his maternal grandfather, gave him the moniker “Corky” because he was “too goddamn small to be a Sidney.” Carl Berling showed him unconditional love and they were devoted to one another.
Corky attended the public schools in Livingston, graduating from Park Senior High in 1965. He was actively involved in the Scouting Program. He served as Park County’s Diver and his interest was held by anything that included the Yellowstone River. His passions were diving, motorcycling, four-wheeling and fishing.
Corky served in the U.S. Army from 1966 to 1969 in Vietnam. He was a Park County firefighter and employed by the Burlington Northern Railroad as an electrician. He performed all of his tasks, at any position, to the best of his ability.
Shannon Dunagan Kilmer is his daughter from the marriage to Kathy O’Connor. Stephanie Dunagan was married to Corky for 22 years and remains his dear and trusted friend. Bill Eggar, friend since first grade, was his companion in trips to Yellowstone Park, rides over the Beartooth Pass, floating the river and fishing.
Considered a “miracle” by the VA, he suffered from a number of serious health issues but met those challenges with perseverance and tenacity.
Corky is survived by daughter Shannon, grandson Kyler and sister Nancy Dunagan. His life was made richer by Stephanie Dunagan and best friends Bill and Diane Eggar. His friends in Lavina were a treasured source of support.
Corky’s friendships were long and strong. Corky spoke truth; expected and inspired others to do the same. Our world is sadder for his loss.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 30, at Michelotti-Sawyers Mortuary, 1001 Alderson Ave.
