R.A. “Bob” Smith passed away peacefully at Billings under the loving care of RiverStone Hospice on March 7, 2022. On Dec. 18, 1931, he was born to Ethel (Schmid) and John J. “Jack” Smith in Sidney. He was a devoted member in many Catholic parishes, including St. Pius X in Billings and St. Michael’s in Absarokee.
Bob received his education in Sidney and graduated from Sidney High School with the class of 1950. Playing basketball was the highlight of his school career.
In 1954, Bob joined the Marine Corp. and was honorably discharged in 1957. Shortly after that, he met Carolyn Fornall, the love of his life, and they were married in January 1959. Most of Bob’s career was in sales for food industries. His favorite pastime was following sports, especially basketball for all ages. Also, he had a high interest in NBA, NFL, Indy and NASCAR car racing.
Bob was preceded in death by his sister and brother-in-law, Jackie and Merle Markhardt; his brother and sister-in-law, Ivan and Jean Smith. He is survived by his wife, Carolyn; five children, Mark Smith, Theresa Sanchez, Craig Smith, Roberta Sutherland (Terry), Candice Smith; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and brother and sister-in-law, John and Janette Smith.
On Friday, May 13, at 6:30 p.m., a wake service will be held at St. Michael’s Church, Absarokee, followed by a memorial mass on May 14, at 11 a.m. A burial ceremony will be at Calvary Cemetery/St. Pius X in Billings with military honors on Monday, May 16, at 1 p.m.
