My journey on earth ended on January 30, 2026, but let me start at the beginning. I was the youngest son of a Norwegian immigrant, Anton Hustad and Alma (Kjensrud) Hustad, who was also Norwegian. I was delivered at Mrs. Baker’s home, in Lustre MT. I was met at home by my four siblings, Myron, Doris, Leonard, and Russell.
I grew up on the family farm outside of Lustre, where I helped my dad with the farm and broke horses. I started my education in a small schoolhouse located on the corner of our large farm. After a few years, I attended boarding school in Fraser MT. I stayed in the boarding house for a time and then moved in with my maternal grandparents, who relocated from their homestead to Lustre. I graduated from Wolf Point high school with the class of 1960.
At an early age, I raised chickens and sold eggs plus a few of the chickens, for some extra money. My first job was at Carter Gas Station. I worked at that full-service gas station while attending high school in Wolf Point. I met and married Charlotte Dionne in 1961. We shared 64 years together and we had two children, Brenda Woodard (Tim) and Merle Hustad (Annette). We were blessed with five wonderful grandchildren, Sean Hustad, Courtney Mabry, Jordan Hustad, Kylie Hustad, and Matteson Blaney. Later, we were blessed again with our four beautiful great-grandchildren, Colten, Gracie, Marly, and Sienna.
I was with Carpenter’s Local 1172 for 50 years. I worked in construction for over 33 years. I was foreman on several local buildings, Sky View High School, Transwestern I, II, & III, and Rocky Plaza, to name a few. I was foreman on several bridge jobs in the 1970s. We constructed our own home in 1980. I also held a Federal Firearm License for many years. After retiring at 55, Charlotte and I opened a business called Big Sky Home Inspection Service. We operated the business for about 7 years. At that point we closed that business and decided to get more serious about traveling. We spent some winters in Arizona, traveled the west coast, and toured Hawaii and Alaska. I really enjoyed traveling but I had other interests as well. I enjoyed hunting and target shooting with my son, Merle. I also liked taking the camper to Yellowstone and other parks and did a little fishing. I loved playing cards and having good conversations. As a carpenter, I continued my passion for woodworking, making several furniture pieces, cabinets, and other fun projects. I also did leather tooling, making my own belts and wallets as I needed them. I enjoyed retirement to the fullest.
I am survived by my wife, Charlotte, daughter Brenda Woodard, son-in-law Tim Woodard, daughter-in-law Annette, and all my grandchildren. I was preceded in death by both parents, my siblings, and my dear son Merle, who passed in 2019.
