Jimmy Kaatz

Jimmy Ervin Kaatz, 65, passed away on June 29, 2025, in Billings, MT., after a long, courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Casper WY to Ervin and Lois (Knudson) Kaatz on May 9, 1960.

Jimmy, affectionately known as Jim, was known for his welcoming nature and his profound love for the outdoors, particularly fishing, which was his passion throughout his life.

Jim grew up in Wolf Point, where he made many life long friends. When Jimmy was in his sophomore year, the family moved to Billings, Mt. Jim graduated from high school in Billings, MT and soon found his calling in the world of millinery. He owned a popular hat shop where he designed and crafted hats, gaining recognition for his work with celebrities, including Merle Haggard, whom he also took fishing. Later in his career, Jim transitioned to painting, working on homes, businesses, and local hospitals, often collaborating with his dad.

In addition to his professional life, Jim cherished the time he spent outdoors, always eager for a fishing, boating or camping adventure. He had a special place in his heart for animals especially dogs. He was a music buff, he could name the title, artist and band members of many of the songs of his time. His CD collection was phenomenal. His friendly demeanor and ability to make people feel welcomed left a lasting impression on all who knew him. Jim was very strong and brave. He had a strong will to live, he fought his cancer and endured unimaginable pain for 5 years.

Jim is survived by his mother, Lois Kaatz; his sisters, Cheryl (Bob) Stracener, Pam Chapin, Karla (Scott) Johnson; brother, Jason (Melissa) Kaatz; nieces, Michaela Chapin, Trista (Will) McClay, Tonya (Phil) Bruner, Tara (Steve) Cole, Thea Michaelsen; nephew, Zachary (Angie) Stracener; and many great-nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Ervin Kaatz, and his grandparents, Martha and Helmuth Kaatz, along with Earl and Josie Knudson. Great nephews, Logan Stracener, Ty Bruner and Brayden Stracener.

Jim's life will be remembered for his kindness, his zestful spirit, and his unwavering love for nature, life and family. His legacy will continue to inspire those who knew him. “His wings were ready, but our hearts were not.”

Cremation has taken place and there will be a memorial service at Michelotti-Sawyers Mortuary on July 26th at 1:30PM, join us for cookies and coffee after. Burial will follow at Yellowstone Valley Memorial Park.
