Donald Russell Angle
September 23, 1932 – August 19, 2026
Donald Russell Angle, of Billings, Montana, passed away on August 19, 2026, at the age of 93. He was born on September 23, 1932, in Byron, Oklahoma, to Roy and Sybil (Williams) Angle.
Don was a graduate of Phillips University in Enid, Oklahoma, where he earned a Bachelor of Education and a Master of Divinity. Following graduation, Don and his beloved wife, Barbara (Danforth) Angle, answered a call to missionary service and spent 15 years serving in the Belgian Congo.
During their years in the Congo, Don and Barbara assisted at several different mission stations, helping Congolese communities establish and strengthen churches while working toward greater self-sufficiency. Their years of service reflected Don’s deep faith, compassion, and commitment to helping others.
While working on a farm project in the Congo, Don contracted brucellosis and was forced to return to the United States for an extended period of rehabilitation in Enid, Oklahoma. During his recovery, Don discovered and developed his love for the art of pottery. He also earned his teaching certificate, beginning a new chapter in his life devoted to education and the arts.
Don taught art at Pioneer High School and served as an assistant coach until his retirement. His passion for pottery continued throughout his life. A gifted craftsman, Don earned numerous awards at local art shows and took great pride in sharing his talent with others. He enjoyed teaching pottery to those interested in learning the craft and generously gifted many of the beautiful pieces he created to family and friends.
Don was also a devoted member of Central Christian Church in Enid, Oklahoma, where he taught Sunday School and served as a Deacon for many years. His faith was an important part of his life and was reflected in his service to his church, his family, and his community.
Don shared his life with his beloved wife, Barbara, of Billings, Montana. Together, they built a life centered on faith, family, service, education, and creativity.
He is survived by his brother, Bill Angle of Blackwell, Oklahoma; his sons, Donald (Karen) Angle Jr. of Lone Tree, Colorado, and Duane (Debbie) Angle of Billings, Montana; four grandchildren, Amanda Angle, Nick Van Mierlo, Jonathan Angle, and Adam Angle; and four great-grandchildren, Carter Van Mierlo, Reagan Angle, Harrison Angle, and Eleanor Van Mierlo.
Don was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Sybil Angle; his brothers, Merle Angle and Jack Angle; and his sister, Marie (Angle) Robinson.
Don leaves behind a remarkable legacy of faith, service, and love. From his years of missionary work in the Congo to his teaching, coaching, and church service, he devoted his life to helping and inspiring others. He will be deeply missed by Barbara, his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, brother, extended family, friends, former students, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, at Yellowstone Valley Memorial Park in Billings, Montana. Family and friends are invited to gather to honor and celebrate Don’s life.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Don’s memory to St. John’s United Home Health and Hospice, 502 N. 30th Street, Billings, MT 59101.
