Obituary

David Wiltrout, 68, passed away on May 26, 2026, in Billings, Montana, leaving behind a legendary trail of laughter, adventure, and unforgettable memories. Born on April 2, 1958, David lived life wide open, turning every ordinary day into an extraordinary story.David was the ultimate prankster, famously known for masterminding the legendary feat of putting a Volkswagen Beetle on top of his school. His vibrant energy and quick wit could light up any room, and his enthusiasm for fun was completely infectious. He refused to sit still when the world was waiting to be explored. The great outdoors was David’s true home, and he held a deep and lasting love for Montana. He was an avid hiker who found peace on the highest peaks and joy in the challenge of a rugged trail. An experienced hunter and fisherman, he spent countless sunrises tracking through the quiet woods or waiting for the perfect catch, often with his favorite dog, Trigger, by his side. For David, the wilderness was a place to connect deeply with nature and share wild stories around a campfire.David's adventurous spirit lives on through his loving family. He is survived by his loving wife Susan, mother, Phyllis Jobes; his daughters, Ashley Wiltrout, Katy Oberg, and Amy Kroll; his grandchildren, Rylee Mason and Cid Oberg; his brother, Roger Wiltrout Jr.; and his sisters, Lori Wilson, Tracy Odvar, and Cathy Wiltrout. He was preceded in death by his father, Roger Wiltrout Sr., and his beloved grandchildren, Andrew and Logan. He approaches his final horizon just as he lived—boldly and without regret. David will be deeply missed but never forgotten by his family, his friends, and all who shared in his wild journey. In memory of Dave, take a walk in nature on your favorite trail or start a new adventure.
