David Samuel Rutledge, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away on May 21, 2025 at the age of 81, surrounded by his devoted family.

Born on June 29, 1943, in Clayton, New Mexico, to Carson Wayne and Eula Joyce Rutledge, his family relocated to southeastern Montana in 1949, settling near Ekalaka. Dave’s youth was filled with rugged adventure and strong family ties. He learned early the values of hard work, perseverance and humility.

Dave would tell you, his greatest success was his life with Jan. Their story began in the first grade, and came full circle after high school, when they married in 1964. Their union was one of laughter, resilience, and devotion-spanning more than 60 years. Together, they raised two daughters, Darci and Jill, whom Dave adored. They later welcomed two sons-in-law, Uwe Schaider and Mike Follett with pride and open arms.

Dave graduated from high school, and went on to earn his degree from Eastern Montana College. He began a successful career in the oil industry with Conoco Phillips. In 1977, he and his wife Jan took a bold step together and founded their own business in Bozeman, Montana. They had 22 years in the wholesale oil business, as well as their convenience stores located throughout the Gallatin Valley area.

As retirement approached, Dave and Jan devoted themselves to a property in the pine hills of Ekalaka “The Ranch”—a personal project that brought so many family and friends joy and memories. He said the only thing we are raising here is our grandchildren, Natalie and Madelaine (children of Darci and Uwe) and David and Catherine (children of Jill and Mike).

Additionally, 12 years of wintering in the warmth of Surprise, Arizona helped to comfort the growing health challenges due to his kidney transplant. Despite decades of medical issues, he will be remembered for his strength, integrity, humor and unwavering love for his family.

He is survived by his wife Jan; daughters Darci Schaider (Uwe) and Jill Follett (Mike); grandchildren; and a wide circle of extended family and friends who will miss him.

Our Dad requested no funeral, a casual service will be held in the Chapel at Mission Ridge 3840 Rimrock Road, on Tuesday May, 27th at 10:30 a.m.. A graveside Memorial service will be held at a later date in Ekalaka, Mt. where his ashes will be inurned.
