Barbara Downing

Our beloved Barbara (Frederick) Downing of Billings MT, passed away Sunday July 13th, 2025 in Bozeman MT.

Barbara was born 1948 in Billings MT. Daughter of Sally and Robert Coffman. A proud 4th generation Montanan. She graduated from Billings West High School and attended Eastern MT College in Billings. Barbara had a diverse career in radio, television and newspaper over many years. An accomplished writer as well, Barbara wrote a lifestyle column for the Billings Gazette called “Once Over Lightly”, a relatable satire of family life, showcasing her unparalleled sense of humor. Barbara was a master at story telling. She even produced and acted in various plays and performances. She enjoyed celebrating all the holidays and birthdays, any excuse to get everyone together. She enjoyed playing the piano, cooking, gardening and summertime adventures to Red Lodge, Silver Gate and Yellowstone Park. Barbara loved to read and research her family's deep history through genealogy. She was devoted to being Catholic and to the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Incredibly talented, smart and witty. Her resilience and determination was ever-present, all of her life. Barbara was captivating to all who knew her. Her unconditional love and devotion to her family and friends will always be remembered, and cherished.

Barbara is survived by her children: Son, Tom Frederick and his children Kyer, Karina and Jacob. Son David Frederick, his wife Marisa and their children Juan Benavides, Carlos Benavides, Nina Benavides, Leah Frederick, Tanesha Frederick, Braeden Frederick, his fiance Destiny Killinger and their daughter Aurora. Daughter, Jennifer Frederick. Siblings: Sister, Mary and husband Mark Cady. Brother, John Coffman. Sister, Sara and her husband Paul Gillot. Sister Liz and her husband Mike Tryan.

Barbara was preceded in death by her husband Paul Downing, son James Frederick and grandson Anthony Frederick (Tom’s son).

A vigil will be at 6 p.m. Wednesday, July 23rd at Michelotti-Sawyers Mortuary, 1001 Alderson Ave. The funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 24th at St. Thomas Apostle Catholic Church, 2055 Woody Drive. Burial will follow services at Mountview Cemetery. A reception will be held at Willowbrooke Barn, 414 S. 64th St. West.
