Dwight Gilliland

Surrounded by family and friends, Dwight Gilliland died peacefully at home on Thursday February 21st from complications of COPD.

He was born June 13, 1952 in Toppinish, Washington to Hap and Erma Gilliland, long time residents of Billings who now reside in Bozeman, Montana. His sisters are Diane Bakun of Bozeman and Lori G. Sargent of Louisville, KY.

As a teenager in Billings, MT, Dwight began racing off-road in a dune buggy and soon progressed to racing autocross with the local sports car club. Dwight set overall records at various events sanctioned by the Northwest Hillclimb Association, and won two 4ths, a 5th, and a 10th at SCCA Solo Nationals in Autocross.

Dwight had the good fortune of working as a mechanic, crew chief, fabricator, and occasionally, driver for race teams including Condor Racing, Penske Racing and other teams running under various sanctioning bodies all over the world.

Dwight retired from working for other race teams and returned to Billings. In 1996 he married Kristi Mathson.

In Billings, Dwight worked for several Billings businesses and owned a powder-coat business for several years. During this time he continued designing and racing his own cars, assisting his numerous friends with their cars, and he built homes for his parents, and himself and Kristi in Emerald Hills. Dwight and Kristi enjoyed running their sled dog teams all year around.
