Donald Eugene Epperson, Sr., “Epp”, 86 of Columbus, formerly of Helena and Billings, passed away at Stillwater Billings Clinic in Columbus on February 27, 2013, following a brief illness. Don was born in April 6, 1926, in Delafield, Ill., the oldest child of Paul H. and Lela (McDaniel) Epperson. He graduated from McLeansboro High School in McLeansboro, Ill. and went on to join the Navy, enlisting in 1944. Don served during WWII and was honorably discharged in 1946. He reenlisted in 1951 served in Korea, and was discharged again in 1952. While in the Navy, he obtained the rank of Quarter Master.
Before Don reenlisted in 1951, he married Billie June Story on January 5, 1951, in Evanston, Ill. They made their home in Illinois for a time before moving to Montana in the late 50’s. They had 2 children, Don, Jr., and Cindy.
Following his service to his country, Don operated the Oil Abstract Company in Billings. Later, he started his own business, Donald Epperson Oil Leasing Service, from 1965-1985. In 1985, Don obtained his Real Estate License and went to work for Floberg Prudential Real Estate, which he did for a few years before retirement.
Epp was an avid golfer most of his adult life. Although he tried, Don never had a hole-in-one. He was a past member of the Billings Petroleum Club as well as past member and past President of Yellowstone Country Club. He enjoyed hunting on Sarpy Creek, gardening, reading, attending sporting events, and truly enjoyed watching his grandchildren in their school and sporting activities.
Don was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife Billie June. He is survived by his children Don (Cindy) Epperson, Jr. of Columbus; and Cindy (Kelly) Peterson of Helena; sister Peggy Webb of Bethalto, Ill.; grandchildren, Tucker Peterson, McLean (Brandi) Peterson, Joe Epperson, Anna Epperson, Luke Epperson; and great granddaughter Emmeline Boone Peterson; as well as his special friend Betty Hanstrom.
Cremation has taken place. Memorial Services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Monday, March 4, at Michelotti-Sawyers Mortuary. To benefit his grandson Tucker, memorials may be made to PEERS Unlimited, P.O.
