Betty Lois Mallow, 88, passed away June 11, 2018 with family by her side.
She was born on March 11, 1930 in Watford City, ND, daughter of Edward and Bertha Johnson. Betty was raised on a farm south of Watford City, attended school through eighth grade and then took correspondent classes. After school, she went to Bismarck, ND, to pursue her life time love of cosmetology. She worked in Minot, ND, for a short time, but then returned to Watford City. She started her own business, The B & R Beauty Shop, located in the back of Claude Hanna’s Barber Shop. Betty was not old enough to get her manager’s license, but sister Rose was … hence the name.
On April 21, 1955, Betty married Paul L. Mallow in Williston, ND. Preparing for the birth of their first daughter, she closed the business in Watford City. She and Paul moved to Farmington, NM, in 1957 to follow his job. They spent 18 years there, had their second daughter, and Betty continued to work as a hairstylist in several beauty shops. She loved her clients, always trying to make them look and feel their best! A happy day came in 1975 when Paul told Betty his company was transferring them back to Williston, ND, once again putting her close to her family roots. She enjoyed cooking and having big holiday gatherings. There was always good country music playing while preparing for the big event. In 1992, they retired to Mesa, AZ. Many good times were had with their neighbors at Sunland Village East, where they lived, and they traveled each summer to get relief from the heat. After deciding to get closer to one of their daughters, they moved to Billings in 2007. Betty continued to enjoy friends from far away with phone calls and writing small notes. She supported USPS and Hallmark by using her phenomenal memory, never forgetting anyone’s birthday or anniversary. She was thrilled if someone stopped by and something was always served as a great visit would unfold. She never put herself first and always considered other people’s feelings.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents; siblings Elvin, Belle, Ray, Rose and Norman; niece Nancy Vance; and nephews Keith Lawler and Mervyn Johnson.
She is survived by her husband, Paul; daughters Jo Ann (Wayne) Peterson and Paulette Mallow.
Betty will be missed by many others that she touched with her kindness, sense of humor, and gentle spirit.
