Mabel Maxine Dolan passed away on Sept. 24, 2017, after a brief stay at RiverStone Hospice House.
She was born on July 8, 1923, to Cliff and Emma Devaney. Her place of birth is listed as Roosevelt County. She grew up in Wolf Point with her sisters Mary and Henny (Henrietta). Mom took bookkeeping in high school and kept books for most of her life. She met Jim Dolan and they hit it right off. They were married and moved to Billings.
Jim and Mabel lived in various apartments in Billings in the ’40s. It took them (Mom) 10 years to save enough down for a down payment on a house. They found the house and, on Labor Day 1954, with Mike 6 months old and Dan due in August, they moved in. Mom would live in that house for the next 64-1/2 years.
Mom had various bookkeeping jobs before she had the boys. Mom went back to work when both boys were in school. She worked for Richard’s Trucking and then Marketing Specialties.
Mom retired, but a friend found her a part-time job at Yellowstone River Campgrounds. She worked there for a few more years.
Mom retired again. However, at this time, she became a garage sale diva. She and Lilian would be all over the Heights every Friday and Saturday from spring to fall. Mom enjoyed the action, but bought mostly for others. She kept two bookstores well stocked and a classroom well supplied.
This eventually became hard on Mom as the driveways became too steep and too long.
Shortly after turning 89, various medical problems kept Mom closer and closer to home until her passing.
Dan and Mike would like to thank the doctors and nurses at the Billings Clinic for all they did for Mom, Right at Home caregivers, the staff with RiverStone Hospice, our neighbors Tractor and Equipment Co., and F.O.E. 176 for their support.
Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 28, at Michelotti-Sawyers Mortuary, 1001 Alderson Ave.
