Clare Hansen

Clare Hansen

Clare Patricia (Sullivan) Hansen passed away unexpectedly on Jan. 26, 2019, at St. Vincent Healthcare.

She was born on March 14, 1933, in Hot Springs, South Dakota, to Dr. Paul and Mary Sullivan. Being the only girl, she was loved and adored by her six brothers. Clare attended eight different grade schools and three different high schools while her father was serving in the military, graduating from Billings Central Catholic High School in 1951. Clare then went on to attend the nursing program at Carroll College in Helena, and graduated as a registered nurse from the St. Vincent’s nursing program. Most of her nursing career was done in Billings; Ann Arbor, Michigan; and three years in Lincoln, Nebraska, where she concentrated on pediatric nursing.

While in nurse’s training, she met Wayne Hansen on a blind date and, a few years later, they were married at Holy Rosary Church in Billings. Following their marriage, they moved to Lincoln while Wayne completed dental school training. They moved to Great Falls, where Wayne was stationed as a flight dental officer in the Air Force, and then they returned to Billings, where she was an RN at St. Vincent hospital. She put her nursing career on hold after Wayne was in dental practice to raise the three children they were blessed with: Kristen, Scott and Eric.

While attending Carroll College, she participated in many musical plays, and she was often a lead singer. Her love of singing continued after moving to Billings. Clare once had the pleasure of singing at the Miramar Naval Officers Club while visiting their dear friends who were in the Navy during the Vietnam War. She was active in the Junior League and performed in the Follies. Clare was an avid bridge player and her main group that she played with was together for over 30 years. She enjoyed being around people and enjoyed a good party. Clare had a wonderful sense of humor, a smile that would light up the room and a great big laugh that was often contagious. She was kind, caring and always greeted you with a hug. One of her greatest loves was spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her grandkids and great-grandkids has special names for her, calling her Grammy or Harmony (Korean for Grandmother) or Gigi (great grammy). She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend. She will be missed by all!

Clare is survived by her husband, Wayne; daughter Kristen “Kris” Murphy and her children Joseph (Karian) West and Jennifer (Jay) Andrews; son Scott (Rena) Hansen, their children Connor and Hanna; son Eric (Yuni) Hansen, their children Erica (Alex), Kianna (Jordan) and Samantha; her six brothers, Tim, Larry, Denny, Mick, Pat and Joe Sullivan; many nieces and nephews; and five great-grandchildren.

Memorial services honoring Clare will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, March 14, at St. Pius X Catholic Church, 717 18th St. West.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Billings Food Bank.
