Dennie Harris

1943 ~ 2008

Remembrances

To: Bev and Family

We are sorry to hear about your loss, Dennie was a great husband, father, and friend. He will be missed by all. We spent many nights and weekends at the softball field and we shared many great times on and off the field. When we think of Dennie we also think of you Bev as well as Big Ed and Colleen, Dana and Linda, Bob and Charlene, Jerry and Vicki and many others. We had some great memories that we will treasure always. Our thoughts and prayers are with your family at this very tough time. Know this Dennie is out of pain and is in the best place he could ever be. My guess is he is doing something at a huge softball complex where everything is perfect and he can do anything he wants to do.

Your friends Scotty and Donna Armstrong

Bev, Kim, and Shelly:

My condolences and sympathies for you and your entire family. I will always remember Denny from Boise Cascade and Fargo G&P. He was always helpful and understanding toward me. He always had a smile on his face. That is how I remember him.

Dennie Ray Harris, 65 of Billings, passed away Sunday, September 14, 2008 at his home.

The son of Mel and Adrinne Harris, Dennie was born March 19, 1943 in Los Angeles, CA.

In 1960 he graduated from Hillsdale High School in San Mateo, Ca where he was active in DeMolay, football, basketball, baseball, track, wrestling and golf. Dennie played football for two years at Pacific Lutheran University where he majored in theology, wanting to be a pastor. While attending West Valley Junior College, Dennie was president of the Vets Club.

Dennie served three tours of duty in Vietnam with the Navy on the USS Aludra. He was discharged in 1968.

He worked for Lockheed Missile and Macy’s before moving to Billings with Federal Mogul as a salesman in 1976. Most of his career was spent as a window and door specialist with Boise Cascade and with Home Depot for the last ten years.

Dennie was well known throughout the community for his involvement with softball. He was instrumental in the founding and starting of Stewart Park, served as president of the Men’s Softball League for 5 years and organized the March of Dimes Softball Tournament for many years. He was an active member of Pilgrim Congregational Church where he was youth leader from 1990-2003, taught Sunday school, played Santa each Christmas and served as a Deacon and Trustee. Dennie was also involved in the rebuilding of the playground at Broadwater Elementary and served on the Employee Committee at Home Depot.

Dennie met Beverly Buerkle while playing softball and they were married May 21, 1977 in Billings.

Dennie was a loving and laid back guy who loved to laugh and spend time with the people he loved the most. He was dedicated, hardworking, and had a heart bigger than life. Dennie was an amazing man who cared about people and unconditionally loved his family. He had a sense of humor that kept him and us smiling through it all and a faith that kept him peaceful and courageous.

Survivors include his wife Beverly, two daughters, Kim “Kimmie” Harris and Shelly (Dennis) Rumsey all of Billings, two brothers, Larry (Lori) Harris of Tacoma, WA, and David (Diana) Harris of Eugene, OR., brother-in-law Gary (Bonnie) Buerkle of Billings, nieces and nephews, Beky Harris, Ben (Karen) Harris, Joshua and Colby Harris, and Brandon Buerkle, and numerous aunts, uncles and friends including special family friend Liz Hoy.

Dennie was preceded in death by his parents, Mel and Adrinne Harris, brother Stephen Harris, and in-laws, Riney and Esther Buerkle.

Daddy, you brought sunshine to everyone who knew you. You were so strong and brave and we all love you very much. You were our rock and strength here on earth, and are now our guardian angel. We will miss you every day and think of you always.

The family would like to thank the Billings Clinic, Dr’s Whittenberger and Klee, the Oncology staff and Riverstone Hospice for the care and kindness given to Dennie and his family.

Visitation will be held from 2-8pm Wednesday at Michelotti-Sawyers Mortuary. Funeral services will be 2pm Thursday at Pilgrim Congregational Church with interment to follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.

Memorials may be made to Pilgrim Congregational Church, the American Cancer Society or Riverstone Hospice.

Dennie, knowing you as long as I have, you have become one of those true friends you get to have so seldom in a persons lifetime. The years we played softball together were filled with so many special moments. All of the "Team Mates" will be a special group. So Dennie is there baseball in Heaven? Thank you dear friend for the special good times and memories remembered.
