Mildred L. Thompson died on Wednesday, September
27, 2007 at Fisher Cottage at St. John’s Campus. She was born on
February 25, 1915 at Salem, Indiana, the third child and second
daughter to Harry B. Lusk and Harriet Spurgeon Lusk. When she was
still a baby, her parents moved from Salem to Central Illinois where
Mildred lived and received her early education and where she earned
a Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of Illinois at
Urbana-Champaign, Illinois. When she was a senior in college she met
her future husband, Mr. Ned Thompson, who was a graduate student at
the University of Illinois and when they each had received their
degrees they were married on September 29, 1939.
Their first home was at Tucson, Arizona where Mr.
Thompson was on the staff, as Research Economist, at the University
of Arizona, and Tucson was their home until Mr. Thompson was called
to serve in the army in the Second World War.
When the war ended, Mildred and her husband again
returned to the Southwest living in New Mexico, Arizona and Nevada
until they moved to Billings in 1962.
Mildred was a member of and an Elder in the
Presbyterian Church and she was active in church work and in Bible
Study. She was a member of the American Association of University
Women and was active in the modern literature study group in the
Billings Chapter. She was a Certified Teacher for secondary
education, and when their locations and situations permitted, she
would occasionally serve as substitute teacher in Science classes
and in Home Economics. She had many interests and hobbies, but her
main interest and occupation was home making in the many places and
houses where she and her husband lived. She enjoyed decorating,
cooking and entertaining and she loved to travel. She and her
husband were world travelers until his death in 1998.
She is survived by her sister-in-law, Nora Lusk of
Costa Mesa, California and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. She
is survived also by some special friends Jim and MaryAnn Canan,
their children Jim (Julie) Canan, Deb Canan, David (Kathy) Canan,
and Rob (Peggy) Canan and their families. Millie, as she was known
by her friends, treasured this association with these special ones
and their families.
Mildred was preceded in death by her husband, Ned;
her parents; four brothers, Gene, Harry, Robert and Glenn; and
sisters Grace and Pauline.
Cremation has taken place. Private Graveside
services are planned at Mountview Cemetery. Memorial Services will
be held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, October 22, 2007 at Lillis Chapel at
Mission Ridge, 3840 Rimrock Rd., Billings, MT.
