Lydia Schield

1915 - 2007

Lydia Schield, 91, of Billings passed away on Tuesday, September 11, 2007 at Saint Vincent Healthcare. She was born on September 23, 1915 in Dodge, North Dakota, a daughter to Jacob and Minnie Ziegler.

Lydia lived and grew up on the family farm in Dodge, North Dakota. She worked at various jobs on farms in and around Dodge, North Dakota. At the age of 21 she met Otto Schield and they were married in Sidney, Montana on October 29, 1936. Together Lydia and Otto raised five children and farmed in Sidney, Montana until 1956 when they moved to Billings, Montana. Lydia worked at Saint Vincent Hospital in the Housekeeping Department. She later worked in the Drapery Dept of JC Penney’s Department store in Billings. She then started her own drapery business working out of her home creating lovely window solutions for many homes in Billings. Lydia's hands were never idle as she was always mending, altering and sewing clothing for family and friends. She also designed and created beautiful handmade quilts for family members.

When her health failed, she began crocheting afgans for family and friends. Lydia was also an outstanding German cook. Family and friends gathered to enjoy many of her infamous German feasts with Otto playing his accordion or the piano.

Lydia was preceded in death in 1986 by her husband, Otto Schield after 50 years of marriage; her sons, Mike Schield in 1973, Jim Schield in 1975; granddaughter Audrey Ostwald; and grandson K.C. Miller in 1981.

She is survived by her daughter Arlene Sheldon (Marvin) of Woodburn, Oregon; son, Willie Schield (Diane) of Billings, Montana; daughter, Carol Rottenbiller (Randy)of East Glacier Park, Montana; grandchildren, Bill Ostwald (Jackie) of Port St. Lucie, Florida, Wende Polen (Mark) of Billings, Montana, Tina Schield of Elko, Nevada, Kevin Schield of Salem, Oregon, and Mike Mitzel (Jaymie) of Billings, Montana. Lydia also enjoyed spending time with her great-grandchildren, Tiffany, Ashley, Nickalous Hiersh of Elko, Nevada, and Lane and Avery Polen of Billings, Montana.

Lydia always had a sweet smile for anyone who was fortunate to be in her presence. She touched the lives of so many people throughout her life and was the foundation for our family gatherings.

The family wishes to express their deepest gratitude to the staff at St. John's for their excellent care and support of our Lydia. A special thanks to the Staff of 3- Tower at Saint Vincent Healthcare for their excellent care of Lydia during her final days and special thanks to Kathy, RN for her comforting presence and support for our family during her final hours. The family also wishes to extend our gratitude to Kaye Blair, RN for the continued support and assistance she provided to Lydia for the past two years.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M., Saturday, September 15, 2007 at Michelotti-Sawyers Mortuary. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
