| Remembrances
Hi, Cathy, Tim, and Dan, I am so sorry to hear about your Mom. What great memories we have of all of the great times we shared with our families. I don't know many people that could share laughter more than your Dad! He could always find and tell a good story. Remember all of those antelope hunts? Can you believe we survived that many bumps in the back of the pick-up? And early morning, too! We would probably be in jail now if we tried to hunt that way again. My boys would love to try it though!! Your parents always celebrated life and I hope that you are celebrating the life that you shared with your folks. In fond remembrance of Clair. Claire Conter, 91 of Billings, passed away at St. John’s Lutheran Nursing Home on January 6, 2007, following a short battle with cancer. Claire was born on September 18, 1915 in San Francisco, CA to Earl and Edna Laumeister. She grew up and attended schools in Berkeley, CA graduating from Berkeley High School in 1933. After high school, Claire sold Millinery in a department store in Berkeley. This required a good sense of fashion, which she possessed and truly enjoyed. Claire met John Conter in Berkeley while he was there working for Cutter Laboratories. They were married on January 5, 1941. John was drafted into the Army shortly after, and Claire went to work at Cutter until John’s return from WWII. Claire and John traveled across the Northwest for his job, finally settling in Billings, MT in 1960. In 1965, Claire started volunteering at St. Vincent Hospital. Her desire to serve lasted for the better part of 40 years. She was the manager for the Cherry Nook Café, which was a position she took very seriously. In addition to the hospital, she gave her time to the Central High Carnival (now known as MayFair), and was instrumental in starting the St. Anthony’s Circle at St. Thomas Church, selling religious articles and ordering and organizing the merchandise for the church. In 2001, Claire received the Celebration Of Life Volunteer Award for her passion and dedication to the hospital and to her community. John and Claire owned and operated the Conter Spotted Ass Ranch near Pompey’s Pillar. They founded The American Council of Spotted Asses, both holding office. Claire was the corporate Secretary/Treasurer for over 25 years. In December 1999, they moved to Mission Ridge, where she volunteered at the Country Store and also gave her time visiting the sick and the shut ins throughout the St. John’s Campus. She loved to share her blueberry coffee cakes with friends and family and enjoyed a good game of bridge. Claire was preceded in death by her parents; brother Lamory Laumeister; and her husband John in 2000. She is survived by her children, Tim (Nancy) Conter of Benton City, WA, Kathy (Dean) Jehowski of Livingston, MT, and Dan (Kathy) Conter of Grapevine, TX; grandchildren, Melissa Losett, Tim Jehowski, Todd Jehowski, Michele Kahle, Adam Conter, Woody Conter, Keri Conter, Josh Conter, Megan Vance - Ochs, and Garrett Vance; and 11 great-grandchildren. Cremation has taken place. Vigil services will be held at 7:00 P.M., on Monday, Jan. 8, at Michelotti-Sawyers Mortuary. Memorial Mass will be at 11:00 A.M., on Tuesday, at St. Thomas the Apostle Church. A reception will be held at Mission Ridge in the Lillis Chapel following the service. |
