Daryl Dean Van Steeland

Remembrances

Daryl Dean Van Steeland, 55, of Billings, died peacefully Thursday morning, November 23, 2006 of complications from leukemia, an illness he battled bravely for nineteen months. Daryl was born on October 6, 1951 in Billings, Montana where he lived for most of his life. He grew up on his family’s farm outside of Billings where he developed the extraordinary work ethic for which he was known. Daryl graduated from Senior High School in 1969 and later earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Eastern Montana College. He taught high school mathematics in Wallace, Idaho for one year, and then returned to Billings. He helped his parents on the farm and spent the past 14 years working at ABCO Supply until the time of his death.

Daryl loved to work outside and he had a special aptitude for growing things. He led a simple life spending many hours in his garden, and he never burdened himself with excesses. He most enjoyed spending time with family, reading the newspaper, doing crossword puzzles and playing fantasy football. Daryl will be missed for his contagious laugh, his beautiful flowers, and his selfless willingness to help others.

Daryl is survived by his mother Rosemary Van Steeland of Billings, brother Fred (Susan) Van Steeland, Jr. of Cut Bank, sister Debbie (Dave) Ward of Lynnwood, WA, and seven nieces and nephews: Janelle Van Steeland, Brian (Lisa) Van Steeland, Melanie Van Steeland; Callie (Jason) Banfield, Jeff (Heather) Handlin, Amy (Gene) Johnson, and Scott (Breann) Handlin; four great-nephews: Trenton Handlin, Jaxon Banfield, Tyler Van Steeland, and Steven Van Steeland; and great-niece Reese Banfield. Daryl’s father, Frederick F. Van Steeland preceded him in death in 2002.

Visitation will begin at 5:00 p.m. Sunday, November 26 at Micholetti-Sawyers Mortuary, to be followed by a Rosary at 7:00 p.m. Funeral mass will be held Monday, November 27 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Bernards Catholic Church.
