Leo C. Schwehr

Leo C. Schwehr went to be with the Lord on Thursday May 26, 2011 after an arduous bout with cancer. He was born to Edward P. and Elizabeth L Schwehr in Belfield, ND on Dec 6, 1930 as 13 of 16 children.

When he wasn't hiding from the teacher in the wood shed, he received his elementary education in a one room schoolhouse. He attended high school in New England, ND, boarding school in Dickinson, ND, and finally graduation from Billings Central in 1948. He then spent some time logging with his brother John and trained show horses in Billings. In 1951 he entered the army, learned diesel mechanics and traveled the globe aboard a ship during the Korean War. Afterwards, he returned to Billings as a mechanic at the greyhound bus station and eventually established an interior commercial construction company that he ran with pride for 46 years. All the while he was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed sharing adventures with friends on hunting, fishing and snowmobile expeditions which provided fodder for his wonderful ability to share stories. On Dec 14, 1977 he married the love of life, Shirley Elliott. During his 12 year retirement he paired his undying passion for fishing with Shirley's enthusiasm for traveling which lead them on journeys spanning months across North America living in a motor home with boat in tow.

He is survived by his wife Shirley; children Darren Schwehr of Bozeman, Edith (David) Couch, John (Kenna) Keller, Linda (Calvin) Pedersen, Mike Keller of Billings; 8 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren; siblings Sr. M Esther OSB of Watertown S.D., Francis (Dorathy) Schwehr of Santa Clara, CA, Elizabeth (Art) Depner of Spokane, WA, John (Loretta) Schwehr of Deaver, WY, Richard (Sybilla) Schwehr of FL, Mary Ann Schwehr of Billings, and Robert (Judy) Schwehr of Boise, ID. Also Eva Schwehr of Billings.

He was preceded in death by his infant son Leo; grandson Connor; parents; brothers Phil, Edward and wife Gwen, sister Eunice and husband Mike.

Our family wishes to thank everyone for their thoughts and prayers.

Visitation will begin 2-8pm Monday at Michelotti-Sawyers Mortuary. Vigil services will be 7pm Tuesday and Funeral Mass 11am Wednesday, both at St. Pius X Catholic Church. Rite of Committal will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Remembrances

Sorry to hear of your loss of Leo. I worked with Leo for years and we have visited on the phone several times a year since he retired. I just talked to him on the phone several months ago and had no idea he was sick. I will be thinking of him and his family and the many visits Leo and I have had. God bless his family
