Leroy Gavin Pollock

Leroy Gavin Pollock passed away in Red Lodge, Montana, May 2, 2011 from a heart attack. He was 81 years old.

Born February 28, 1930 to Andrew and May (Darrow) Pollock. Born in Scotch Coulee, Bear Creek, MT. At 6 months of age Leroy moved to Red Lodge. His dad died when he was 12 years old with his mother passing when he was 13 years old. He grew up in Red Lodge living with his 6 siblings. At age 14 he began working in the timber trade around Red Lodge. He drove logging trucks over the Cooke City highway at a very young age. He also worked for various farmers in the area. Leroy graduated from Red Lodge High School in 1948, the only sibling to do so.

Leroy served his country, in the Army, during the Korean War being honorably discharged in 1953. Following the Army he went to work for Consolidated Freightways. He retired from there. Leroy was a faithful member of the Teamsters Union.

Leroy married the love of his life, Shirley Jean Caldwell, on June 18, 1952 in Red Lodge. Out of this wonderful marriage were born Carolyn, Kipp, Bill, and Gary.

After 22 years in Billings, Leroy and Shirley move to Pompey’s Pillar for 35 years where they made many good friends. They were big supporters of Huntley Project School. Leroy and Shirley faithfully followed many sports over the years. Leroy loved living in Pompey’s Pillar on his farm. He loved the times the grandkids spent there as he shared his life, love of farming, and experiences with them.

Family gatherings were a highlight. He loved to tell jokes, give everyone a bad time, and argue about everything! Leroy always had a good joke for everyone and would help anyone who needed it. July of 2010 Leroy and Shirley moved back to Billings.

Leroy is survived by wife, Shirley; sister Margaret; and children, Carolyn (Del) Hayter, Bill, Gary (Nancy) and Kim. Grandchildren: Theresa Hayter (Jason), Shawna (Pat) Knipp, Jon (Joyce) Hayter, Brooke Pollock (Scott), Alicia Pollock and Matthew Pollock. Great-grandchildren: Stetson, Dakota, Madchen, Cora, Taylar, Fayth, Benjaman, Logan, Kaycee and Iann.

Leroy was preceded in death by his parents, son Kipp, and siblings, Andy, Frank, Dave, Alice and Bill.

Leroy left a lasting impression on everyone he met. He will be in our hearts and missed forever.

To Shirley and family:
Our condolences to you. There will be void in your life without Leroy, but what a wealth of happy memories you have. May you find comfort in frequently thinking of those times and may that keep him close to you. Leroy was always friendly to everyone and had a smile or a laugh to share--and what a legacy that is to leave with loved ones.
