Dagney Nora Elizabeth Ness Hansen

Dagney Nora Elizabeth Ness Hansen, 100, was born January 16, 1911 in Cottonwood, Minnesota to Martin T. and Nora Ness. Being the youngest of 13 children it was a lively household with lots of love. After growing up in Cottonwood, Dagney moved with her parents to Duluth, Minn. and attended Young & Hurst Business College. She graduated and worked as order clerk for Nelson Knitting Mills.

Dagney loved to sing and was often a soloist at weddings and funerals as well as a member of a sextet that sang at many events in the Duluth area. On January 18, 1937, Dagney married the love of her life, Norman Hansen and they lived in Michigan, Minnesota, North Dakota and Montana over the years. Dagney was a stay at home mom to her four children until (in her 50's) she went to work as secretary at American Lutheran Church.

Church was a big part of Dagney and Norman's life. They became members of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in 1959, and were very active in church activities. Dagney lost her beloved husband to cancer in 1981 and moved to the Vista at St. John’s in 2003.

After a stroke in 2004, she moved to St. John’s Lutheran Home. Although the stroke left her unable to speak she always greeted friends and family with a beautiful smile and never ceased to amaze us with her warmth. Dagney was infinitely kind and gracious and always a lady.

She is survived by her four children Robert (Margaret) Hansen of Savannah, GA, Kathleen (Edmund) Putnam of Fairfax, VA, Charlotte (Allen) Crittenden of Billings and Richard (Patse) Hansen of Lewistown, MT.; as well as 10 grandchildren: Scott, Nathan, Elizabeth, Suzanne, Michael, Rebecca, Ashley, Mario, Anne, and John; and 3 great grandchildren: William, Katherine and Kayla.

The family would like to thank the St. John’s staff for their loving care over the years. What would we have done without you? We would also like to thank Diane Fossen for her faithful visits over the past 8 years, bringing news of the day and flowers from her garden. Your dedication has astounded us.

Memorials may be given to St. John’s Lutheran Ministries or the charity of your choice. There will be a memorial service and internment in late June.

Dagney, you lit up our lives with your warmth and love. We will all miss you .
