James Millison Edwards
James (Jim) M. Edwards passed away peacefully, from natural causes, at home early Monday morning , May 23rd,with his family by his side. James was born in Moore, MT, on April 1, 1925, the oldest of 3 sons to Harry and Lois Edwards. He graduated high school in Missoula, MT in 1943. James enlisted in the US Navy June 13, 1943, and served 3 years as a Radioman Third Class on the USS Apache and the USS Cecil, a soldier transport ship involved in the initial assault of Iwo Jima. After being honorably discharged from the navy he attended the University of Montana in Missoula as a Sigma Chi, and graduated in 1950 with a BA degree in Journalism. During his Senior Year at the University he met Grace McCarten, whom he married May 27, 1951. After graduation Jim was employed by Ma Bell where he worked in various capacities for the next 32 years. James and Grace lived in Butte, MT from 1952 – 1959, where they had 4 sons – Mark, Kevin, Kelly, and Brian. Next they lived in Missoula, MT where their fifth son, Bradley, was born. The family moved to Billings, MT in 1963. Jim retired from the telephone company in 1987.
Jim was a devoted husband and loving father. He enjoyed spending time with his family, golfing, bowling, travelling and many Lion’s Club activities. The family adopted and maintained Cabin #1 at the Lion’s Camp south of Red Lodge, where many family memories were made. Jim was well loved and will be missed very much by everyone who knew him. The family wishes to thank Rocky Mountain Hospice for their care and support in Jim’s last days.
Jim is preceded in death by his wife, Grace, and sons Kelly and Brian. Jim is survived by his brothers, Hal of Billings and John (Suzanne) of Mission Veijo, CA, sons Mark, Kevin and Brad along with their families.
The casket will be open for viewing on Thursday, May 26 at Michelotti-Sawyers Mortuary & Crematory, 1001 Alderson Avenue in Billings. Cremation will follow. A Memorial Service will be 2:00 p.m. Friday, May 27 at Michelotti-Sawyers. Jim will be laid to rest at Sunset Memorial Gardens alongside his wife and sons.
