Lorene Putman


Lorene Putnam, 92, died Sunday, March 27, 2011 at St John’s Lutheran Home, where she had resided for the last 2 years.

She was born February 4, 1919 on a homestead in the Bull Mountains outside Lavina, Mt. When she was still of preschool age, the family returned to Center Point, Iowa to farm her paternal grandfather’s land, because of his ill health. After her grandfather’s death the family returned to Montana, where they farmed on the bench land outside of Lavina. Lorene attended high school in Lavina where she was a member of the girl’s basket ball team and was proud to serve as the captain for a period of time.

After graduation, Lorene moved to Billings to attend Business College. In 1938, she married Charles (Chuck) R. Putnam. They had 2 sons, Robert and Stan, and a daughter, Donna. Lorene worked as a bookkeeper at Burlington Northern, Lindamood’s Music Store, and the Women’s Clinic. She enjoyed dancing, playing cards, and getting together with friends and neighbors. Lorene belonged Eastern Star and she and Chuck were members of several square dance clubs. After Chuck’s death in 1975, Lorene was active in Half-Pairs Square Dance Club and the Widowed Person’s Organization. She organized and played in several Pinochle games and tournaments, as well as taking care of her rental property.

Lorene was preceded in death by her husband, Chuck, her brother, Lloyd Augustine, and her sister, Irene Bolton.

Survivors include children: Charles Robert Putnam of Northridge, CA; Donna Lensing of Billings; and Stan(Karen)Putnam of Helena, MT; grandchildren: Mick (Emilia)Anderegg of Millcreek, WA; Tara Lensing of Great Falls, MT; Kassi Putnam and Jessi Putnam of Helena, MT, great-grand daughters: Ami and Laura Anderegg of Millcreek WA, as well as several nieces and nephews.

Cremation has taken place. Memorial Services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, April 2, 2011 at Michelotti-Sawyers Mortuary. Inurnment will follow at Mountview Cemetery. Donations can be made to St. John’s Lutheran Home in Billings.
