Florence Moen
Florence Moen, 96 of Billings died on January 13, 2011 at
Langemo Cottage on the campus of St. John’s Lutheran Ministries.
Florence was born on November 29, 1914, in Tokio, North Dakota.
She was the fifth of nine children of Anders and Ragna Skarsten.
Her mother passed away when Florence was only 13 years old, so
after finishing high school, she stayed at home to care for her
younger siblings.
In 1935, when her father left North Dakota and moved to eastern
Montana, Florence moved to Iowa where aunts, uncles, and cousins
from her mother’s side of the family were living.
Florence left Iowa in the fall of 1941 and moved to Montana
where four sisters were living. She worked in Billings as an
invoice clerk at Russell Miller Milling Company for five
years and during that time married Robert Hartung in April
of 1944. Her son Jim was born in November of 1946 and her
daughter Jean was born in March of 1949.
Robert was an accountant who had his own practice. Florence
assisted him in the office. He died in November of 1969.
In 1974 Florence began working at the cafeteria at West High
School, a job she really enjoyed. She terminated that job
when she married Arnold Moen in October of 1979. Arnold
passed away in February of 1998.
Florence is survived by her son Jim (Lillian) Hartung and
daughter Jean (Gerald) Graham, both of Billings.
Those wishing to remember Florence are asked to do so with a
memorial contribution to the Yellowstone County Council on
Aging.
