Nancy Ann Coulter LeCaptain

Nancy Ann Coulter LeCaptain, age 81 of Billings, passed on January 3, 2011, following a long battle with Alzheimer's disease. The oldest of three daughters, Nancy was born February 19, 1929 in Albert Lea, Minnesota to Margaret (Robinson) Coulter and Samuel Todd Coulter. She grew up in St Paul, MN listening to the lions roar in the Como Park Zoo near her home. She graduated from the University of Minnesota in June 1950 and shortly after married Alf LeCaptain. Nancy and Alf moved to Billings, MT in 1955 where they raised four children.

After her fourth child started school, Nancy received her teaching certificate and taught in the Billings schools until her retirement in 1991. Education was important to Nancy and she often stressed that to people around her. She had many interests which included archaeology, reading, traveling, hiking, bicycling, and canoeing. She always said she finally found a place she belonged when she joined the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship and was an active member of the Billings fellowship for many years. Alf and Nancy have a cabin at East Rosebud Lake where they spent many days hiking, sailing, canoeing and enjoying the wildlife and the peaceful serenity of the mountains. She always wanted to find an arrowhead. The summer of 2007, her dream came true when she spotted an arrowhead on the ground near their cabin. She cherished her travels to Egypt, Turkey, Africa, England, Scotland, Australia, New Zealand, Peru and France. Her life long dream was to go on an archaeological dig. May you find your dig, Mom.

She is survived by her husband, Alf and their children: Todd (Rosemary) and children Kevin and Stacey of Glen Cove, Maine; Eric and children Katie and Casey of Billings; Susan Barry (Chris) and son Lucas of Cheney, Washington; and Bruce (Kari) and children Kira, Meghan, Nicholas of Haymarket, Virginia; 3 great grandchildren; and her sister Joan Coulter Stockford of Boston, MA.

She is preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Priscilla Coulter Witzel.

Thank you to the staff at the Marquis Vintage Suites Alzheimer's unit and to Rocky Mountain Hospice for your compassion and care over the past three years.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to the Alzheimer's Association - Montana Chapter, 3010 11th Ave. N., Billings, MT 59101 or the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, 2032 Central Ave. Billings, MT 59102.

Cremation has taken place. Memorial Services will be held at 11:00 A.M., Saturday, January 15, at Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, 2032 Central Ave.

Whenever I think of Nancy, I think of her delight when she returned from a bicycle trip in France, telling me how the people in one small village yelled after the women "Courage, courage"!!!! Of course, it sounds more triumphant in French. and Nancy did have courage....as
you all did in these last few years. and we do remember our Christmas eves together. We are hoping to be there this Saturday but may have to go out of town.......our thoughts are with you. Nancy was a very vital person and you captured her spirit perfectly in the obit.......

Dear LeCaptain family,
I had Mrs. LeCaptain at Highland Elementary. Fourth grade? I don't remember for sure but I remember her being my favorite in my years there from K-6. This would have been around 1973 and I remember her fondly all these years later. She was a fine teacher and a good person, which I can't say about all that many people in my 12 years in the Billings public education system. From reading her obituary it sounds like she had a full and fun life....I envy her travels! My condolences to you all on her passing.

We are sorry that we will not be at the memorial service Saturday because we are presently in Missouri, recently returned from Myanmar, which Nancy would have enjoyed. We remember Nancy as being bright and alert and interested in lots of things. Sunday mornings at the Unitarian-Universalist church were enlivened by her presence. We send our condolences to Alf and the family, and our best wishes for good health to them.

Dear Alf and family:
Jennie, Sheri and I are so sorry to hear of the death of Nancy. She was a beautiful lady and a wonderful teacher. My memories of the ski patrol stand foremost in my mind. Nancy not only had to be a mom on the slopes for her family, but for all of us. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you. I am sorry that I will not be able to attend the service on Saturday because I made a commitment quite some time ago that I need to keep.
