Jean Carkulis
Jean Carkulis, beloved wife and mother, passed away late in the evening on Saturday, February 26th, 2011, of respiratory failure due to a lengthy deterioration in health. Jean was born Phyllis Jean Younglove in Mt. Sterling, Illinois on April 6th, 1930, daughter of Clark and Martha (Becker) Younglove. She grew up in Hot Springs, South Dakota. When she graduated from high school, she moved to Missoula, Montana where she met her husband to be, Tom Carkulis, who was going to college on the G.I. bill. They met on a blind date and their relationship continued to endure, and they were married on March 15, 1951. They made their home in Missoula, Roberts, and Red Lodge, and then finally settled in Billings.
Jean was one of the first computer operators in the transformation of the banking industry into the technical age. She worked at First National Bank of Billings from 1963 to 1974. After retiring, she focused on gardening, her crafts, and her extraordinary skills at confectionaries and baking. Her family and friends looked forward to her beautiful and delicious Christmas Trays of cookies and specialty desserts, especially her baklava. Jean was very aware of her heath and was proud of keeping up with her exercise program for 35 years. She had many friends and companions throughout the years, many whom she diligently kept in contact with. While she was employed at the bank, Jean and her co-workers Judy, Lori, and Kathy celebrated birthday lunches together. These dear friends have continued their tradition that sustained for the past 35 years! She was especially fond of dogs, and held a special place in her heart for her last canine companion, Suzie Wong.
As with most coming from the Greatest Generation, nothing was given to her. She worked diligently to move up the socioeconomic ladder for the family, raised rebellious children, and stood her own ground through the old country stereotypical thinking of females.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother James who died in 1950. She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Tom Carkulis; James and his spouse, Janet, their children Claire, Olivia, and Sophie of Helena; daughter Melissa of Billings, and Goddaughter Jeanne Zeeck.
We hope that you are at peace, you will be greatly missed.
At Jean’s request, no public services are planned. A private family service will be held at a later date. Memorials may be sent to ZooMontana and the Humane Society.
