Mabel Irene Engle

Mabel Irene Engle of Billings died October 6th 2010 at Billings Clinic surrounded by family.

Mabel was born July 13, 1920 to Stanley and Hannah Overend. Mabel attended 12 years of schooling in Roundup, Montana, graduating in 1938. The fall of 1938, Mabel attended Nursing training at Billings Deaconess Hospital. She graduated in May, 1941 and received her RN in November, 1941.

Mabel married Roy Dotson on December 27, 1941. There were two children born of this Marriage: a daughter, Janne Marlene and a son, Leigh Robert Dotson. Roy died May 13, 1963 of a heart attack. Mabel (Babe) continued working at her Nursing Profession for 35 years. Office Nursing, Private Duty Nursing, and Supervisory Nursing were some of Babe's responsibilities while employed with Billings Deaconess Hospital.

Babe married Alfred Engle on February 15, 1968. They spent many happy years together traveling and enjoying their Grand Children. You could always find them dancing at the Billings Elks Lodge.

Babe belonged to the First Methodist Church, Friendship Chapter of Eastern Star-"Daughters of the Nile", and Elks Lodge.

Throughout her life, Babe was dedicated to her family and friends. Babe was a nickname that she acquired while in Nurses Training. Her intelligence, voice, inflection, quick wit, and twinkle had become her trademark throughout her Life. Her caring and quick smile was received by anyone and everyone that knew her. Her lifetime friends became a very important part of her life.

All of this is testimony that her life has had great meaning and significance to those of us that have had been fortunate to be part of her life.

Babe maintained a two bedroom Condo for many years at the Sheraton Arms, and later moved into her two bedroom apartment at the West Park Retirement Home.Together with her great friend, Shirley Bailey, decorating her Condo, apartment, and performing general household duties were always taken care of. Shopping for general supplies as well as for special sales of clothing items and such were great happy times with her daughter Janne and Shirley. Of course, the family member's needs were always at the top of her list.

In her later years, Babe enjoyed many activities with her friends at West Park Retirement Home. Here she enjoyed all their activities including dancing, card games, and busy fingers, ice cream socials as well as reading her Wall Street Journal and tracking the stock market. She always looked forward to going to the Retired Nurse's Luncheon at the Elks Lodge every first Thursday of the month. At her age of 90, she had more situational awareness than most of any younger age. Babe was the weaver that migrated throughout the family. Everyone knew that when Mom, Grandma, Nana was asked for advice or direction, she responded with the best advice with wit and energy.

Mabel was preceded in death by her parents, husband Roy Dotson sister Myrtle Spranger, husband Alfred Engle, and her precious son, Leigh Dotson.

Mabel is survived by: Daughter Janne Watson Hayden (Bill); Grand Children Jason Watson (Leigh), Brian Watson (Amber Baker); Great Grand Children Cameron, Grace, Kurtis and Kelsie; Two nephews, Doug and Paul Spranger; All of her many wonderful Friends.

Add Your Remembrance

My name is Sally Morrison, Lorna Frandsen's daughter. My mother and Babe have been friends since nursing school and their friendship continued until my mom's death in June 2008. She was with my mom when she passed away. Very comforting to me and to my mom.

I wish to express my deepest sympathy to you and your family. She was a very special person and touch many lives with her sweet spirit. When I would come to Billings to see my mom, she would always remind us about the great sales at Dillards. Now all the nurses can have a special party in heaven.
