Duane "Dewey" Lindenberg

Duane Lindenberg

Duane was born June 30, 1935 on the family farm outside Starkweather, ND to Walter and Florence Lindenberg.  He attended a country school and graduated from Starkweather High.

In 1956, Duane began his career with the Bureau of Land Management as a land surveyor out of the Denver, CO office.  A year later, while working in O’Neill, NE, he met Mary Graham.  They were married in 1958.  They were blessed with a daughter Debra, in 1959 and then with a son Kevin, in 1960.

Duane transferred to the Billings, MT office in 1963.  Their son Jeff joined the family in 1964 and another son, Matt, completed their family in 1971.

During his 34 year career with the B.L.M., Duane surveyed in seven different states.  In the summer, his family traveled with him and enjoyed living in many small towns and meeting lots of new people.  In the fall, Duane always returned to the Billings office.  His days were busy with recording the summers work, but lunch hours were always saved for card playing with his B.L.M. buddies.  The people Duane and Mary met over the years through work and in the places they lived were like family to them.  Many happy times were spent socializing at rendezvous; Friday night get-togethers and family pot lucks.  Duane retired in 1990.

Duane always kept busy and loved working with his hands.  He and Mary spent many happy hours working side by side on a variety of projects.  They did all the finish work on the family home of 26 years in Lockwood.  Duane helped each of his children with their homes and the quality of his work was a source of pride to them.  Upon his retirement, Duane started his favorite project of all, building a cabin in Red Lodge.  This was an endeavor that included the help of both family and friends.  Many happy hours were spent at the cabin and those memories will be treasured forever.

Duane passed away March 19, 2010 from cancer.  He is survived by his loving family; wife Mary, Debbie and Joe Scheffelman, Kevin Lindenberg, Jeff and Carol Lindenberg and Matt and Christina Lindenberg, nine grandchildren and five great grandchildren, also sister Vivian Wass and sister-in-law Juliann Lindenberg.  He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Kenneth and Ray.

The family would like to extend their thanks to Dr. Brock Wittenberger and the staff at Billings Clinic Hospital for their outstanding care and support.

Visitation will be held 5-8pm Wednesday at Michelotti-Sawyers Mortuary. Funeral; services will be 1pm Thursday, March 25th at Michelotti-Sawyers Mortuary with interment at Yellowstone Valley Memorial Park.
