Otis Francis Hopper, 98, passed away July 12th at the Billings Clinic, of a bone marrow disease. Born March 7, 1912 in Ollie, Montana he was the youngest of four children born to Francis Hopper and Melvina Dillman. He received his elementary education and two years of high school in Ollie, completing his high school education at Billings High School in the Lincoln Building. He attended Billings Polytechnic (now Rocky Mountain College) for two years.

He then went to work for Conoco Service Stations, leasing several stations in Laurel and Billings until 1942 when he began working as a switchman for the Northern Pacific Railroad. In 1943 he suffered a railroad accident which forced him to change vocations. In January 1944 he went to work for Montague’s Jewelers (then the Jewel Box) as a watchmaker and salesman. He officially retired thirty five years later in 1979 but continued to work part time until 2007. He was a 75 year member of First United Methodist Church, a charter member of the Billings Optimist Club and for many years a member of the Big Sky Barbershop Chorus.

In 1937 he married Almeda Grose and to this union was born a daughter Florine Marshall (Darrell) of Soldotna, Alaska. Almeda passed away in 1941 of polio. In 1945 he married Margaret Jacobson. To this union was born two children, Jim Hopper (Janet) of Louisville, Colorado and Julie Koch (Mark) of Bellevue, Washington, six grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Visitation will be held 2:00-8:00pm Wednesday at Michelotti-Sawyers Mortuary. The casket will be closed at church. Funeral services will be held Thursday, July 15 at 11:00 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church, 2800 4th Ave North. Luncheon to follow service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the First United Methodist Church or the charity of your choice.
