George Blackford

George Anthony Blackford, 93, of Billings, passed away peacefully on Thursday morning, July 15, 2010 at Liggett Cottage, St. John’s Campus.

George was born September 27, 1916 to Thaddeus and Mamie Blackford in Billings at his grandmother Blackford’s home. He attended school at Eldergrove and graduated from Billings High School in 1935.

Musa Pryor and George were married July 4, 1941 in Livingston, MT. Dad enlisted in the Navy shortly after Pearl Harbor and served as a Seabee in the Aleutian Islands, Alaska and Camp Parks, Shoemaker, California. Their daughter Kathy was born while in California.

After the war they moved back to Laurel, MT and in 1952 he started to work at the Laurel Refinery. Son Allen was born on the first payday of his new job. He worked for the refinery until his retirement in 1979. Dad was a craftsman who built 3 homes in Laurel and his home in Billings. He was recognized as a pioneer in western wood working in 1993 by the Western Design Conference in Cody, Wyoming.

George was preceded in death in death by his parents and step-father Jesse Devitt, brothers, Glen and Jim Blackford, Don and Howard Devitt, sisters, Bernie Nelson and Mary Helen Anderson.

He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Musa, daughter Kathy (Joe) Carlson, son Allen (Jill) Blackford, 5 grandsons, Mike, Steve and Todd Carlson, Mark and Jason Blackford, 2 great-grandsons, 2 great-granddaughters, cousins, nieces, nephews and special caregiver Connie Rasmussen.

Cremation has taken place. Memorial services will be 11am Thursday, July 22nd at St. Pius X Church with committal in Calvary Cemetery.
