Gertrude Anna Lindau Salte

Gertrude Anna (Lindau) Salte, 96 of Columbus, passed away at Beartooth Manor on January 23, 2010.  She was born on July 2, 1913, the first child of Frank and Mary (Bauernschmidt) Lindau, North of Columbus, on the Lindau homestead.  She has lived almost her entire life in Stillwater County.  Her mother died when she was 9 and she took on the task of helping raise her 4 brothers.

On September 30, 1930 she married Arne Olson Salte, and to this union, 6 children were born; a son who died at birth (10/10/1931), May (11/11/1932), Arnette (6/6/1935), Maxine (3/26/1937), Jim (2/18/1950), and Janice (5/12/1952).  During WWII Gertrude did farm work on the Annin Ranch, as all the men were gone to war.  Gertrude and Arne lived and farmed the home ranch 8 miles east of Columbus, which they bought in 1948.  She sold the farm in 2001 to the Yegen family and they let her continue to live there until May of 2005 when failing health forced her to move to the Meadowlark Assisted Living Facility at the Stillwater Community Hospital.  In August of 2008 she moved to Beartooth Manor.

She went to Norway, Arne’s homeland, with her daughter Maxine in 1987. She used to cut all of the hay on the farm with a sickle bar mower, and then would also bale it after it was raked.  She raised cows, hogs, chickens, sheep, geese and she milked 4 or 5 cows twice a day up until 1999.  She would sell eggs in town to the locals who wanted farm fresh eggs.  She also sold cream to the Columbus Creamery.  She always liked to have visitors.

Gertrude is preceded in death by her husband Arne; her daughters Arnette, Maxine, and Janice; her brothers Dick, Charlie, Paul and Luke; and her grandson David Grubs.  She is survived by her daughter May Caudle (Les) of Portland, OR; her son Jim and family of Columbus;11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and 9 great-great-grandchildren; as well as several nieces and nephews and friends.

She would do anything she could to help her children and grandchildren and would give the shirt off her back if someone needed it.

They were called, they came, and they served in a noble fashion, as is their way.  The family extends their gratitude to the ladies of Riverstone Hospice, and also to Judith Gillette for her faithful vigil on checking on Grandma daily.

Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Saturday, January 30, at St. James Lutheran Church in Columbus.  Burial will follow at Park City Cemetery.  In Lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the charity of one’s choice.
