Nellie Josephine Nelson

Nellie Josephine Nelson, 87 of Billings, passed away Thursday,
September 10, 2009 at Valley Health Care Center. Nellie was
born April 4, 1922 to Jacob and Mary Resinger in Absher, Montana.
She attended grade school there before the family moved to Roundup,
Montana in 1931, where she continued her schooling.
On the Fourth of July, 1941, Nellie married Raymond Curtis Nelson, a
date neither of them would forget for future anniversaries.
Ray passed away in January of 1968.
Nellie traveled with her husband to Army bases in Springfield,
Massachusetts; Lincoln, Nebraska; Fort Benning, Georgia; and Texas.
When her husband was stationed in Greenville, South Carolina, she
traveled with only her small daughter, across the country by car to
join him there. After he was discharged from the military,
they settled in Roundup, MT. They remained there until 1953,
when the family moved to Billings, where they spent the remainder of
their lives.
Mom was always very independent and lived her life very simply.
A recent hand-written card from her great-granddaughter called her a
“super great-grandma”, and spoke also of her independent spirit.
Mom’s favorite past-time was reading. Her greatest joy was
getting visits from her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Nellie was preceded in death by her husband Ray; her parents, Jacob
and Mary Resinger; siblings, Jake and John Resinger, Hedvig Simera,
and Alice Herrick; and several nephews.
She is survived by her two daughters, Linda (Alan) Howell and Susan
Patek; grandchildren, Todd, Joey and Timothy Howell, Paul and
Gregory Patek, Marci Herriford, and Jami Wight; great-grandchildren,
Becky, Matthew, Christina, Nick, Jamie, Justine, Derrick, Timmy,
Jesse, Casey, Melissa, Garon, Britney, Cailen, Lucan, Boden, Celine,
and Finn; great-great grandchildren, Roxanna and Samantha; and
several nieces.
The casket will be open on Tuesday and Wednesday from 8a.m.-5p.m.,
at Michelotti-Sawyers Mortuary. A family memorial service will
be held at 11:00 A.M., Saturday, September 19, 2009 at Little Big
Horn National Cemetery. She will be buried next to her
husband.
A very special “Thank You” to Valley’s Memory Unit, CNA’s and LPN’s
who took special care of our mom and the love that was given to her
while she was a resident there.
